A Birthday Ask (And It’s Not Cake!)

Today is my birthday (April 22), and it got me thinking…

We all appreciate the texts, the cards, the social media shoutouts—they matter. It feels good to be remembered.
But if I’m honest, what really sticks with me each year is something deeper: feeling seen and heard.

So this year, I’m making a different kind of birthday wish.

If I could ask for one gift from this community, it would be this:
Use your voice.

Vote. Participate. Share your perspective. Be part of shaping what we’re building together.

Because just like on your birthday, it’s not just about being acknowledged—it’s about knowing your voice matters.

Each month, we celebrate birthdays in our newsletter by name and date—and it’s a great way to recognize one another.
But I’ve started to wonder… is that enough?

Do we ever take that next step—send a quick note, make a connection, let someone know they’re truly seen?

How do YOU like to be celebrated on your birthday?
What makes you feel seen or heard?

Maybe this month, we try something simple: pick one name from that list and reach out.

As my “gift” back to you, I’ll share one of my favorite takeaways from a session at COABE on gamification:
Engagement doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.

A little fun, a little intention, and a simple moment of connection can go a long way—whether in the classroom, meetings, or our broader community.
