Celebrating Voices of Adult Learning
The IAACE Essay Contest honors adult learners who share their stories of growth, perseverance, and the transformative power of education. This year’s submissions reflected courage, determination, and the real-life impact of literacy and lifelong learning across Indiana.
We are proud to recognize the following essay winners, whose words remind us why adult education matters.
🏆 Exceptional Award – Moses Hassan
From Loss to Legacy
Moses Hassan’s essay is a powerful reflection on grief, resilience, and purpose. After losing his mother and immigrating to the United States at nineteen, Moses faced barriers that could have ended his educational journey. Being told he was too old for high school was devastating—but adult education offered hope when he needed it most.
Through the support of educators and community at the Wagler Education and Training Center, Moses earned his GED and reclaimed his future. His journey is rooted in honoring family, serving community, and giving back to the country that offered him a second chance.
“Adult education transformed my grief into growth. It gave me skills to succeed, the confidence to lead, and the vision to serve.”
