President-Elect Nominee

Sheila Butler

I have been a teacher for 31 years and an adult ed teacher for 19 of those years and an IAACE member since the start of my adult ed journey. I found a forever home when I joined adult ed. I have served as an IAACE board member, treasurer and I am the current secretary of the board. I am honored to be nominated to begin this leadership journey and I will commit to doing the best job I can do to preserve, support and grow adult education in Indiana. I bring experience to this role.  I am the PDF of Region 8. I taught at the COABE conferences both last year and this year. I currently teach 4 classes at Broadview Learning Center in Bloomington. I have served on other boards in leadership roles. I look forward to being your President Elect, thank you for your vote of confidence.

Karen Crawford

Greetings!  I am Karen Crawford from the great city of Crawfordsville, Indiana. As a new board member, I am completing my first year on the IAACE board and hope to continue for this next nominating session. With learned skills from my education, experience in 20 years of business, and six plus years of instructing in ABE/HSE/ELL and Certifications at the Crawfordsville Adult Resource Academy (CARA), I have come to know the importance of the IAACE Board and your membership to our communities, state, and programs. And, as a PDF for the state, I feel I may be able to represent your concerns for adult education in Indiana, the importance of IAACE to adult education, and help all of us develop our professional occupation. Please consider me to represent you on the IAACE Board.

Laura Elsbrook

I am an ABE/IET Instructor and Professional Development Facilitator at the Area 30 Adult Education Program in Greencastle, Indiana.  I have worked in Adult Education for 8 years with another 15 years’ experience in corporate training and staff development.   I have a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and have been on the Putnam County Economic Development Board since 2013.  I am honored to be nominated for the IAACE Board and if chosen to serve, I would bring a rural small town perspective to the board.  I am passionate about helping students utilize education and workforce training to achieve personal growth and earn self-sustaining wages.  I believe we are in adult education to build relationships that encourage students to become lifetime learners, and open doors to high wage/high demand careers with quality employers.  We all rely on IAACE to provide our own professional development, and I would welcome the opportunity to join the conversation and serve as an IAACE Board Member.

Konnie McCullum

Konnie is Adult Education Director for River Valley Resources, Inc. where she is responsible for all Adult Education programming and budgeting for Adult Education services in both Economic Growth Regions 9 and 10. She has a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Louisville.

Konnie has worked as an Adjunct Professor for Ivy Tech Community College and served as Director of Addictions at the Madison Women’s Correctional Facility. She is certified as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor and an Offender Workforce Development Specialist. She is also a professional writer and has earned awards for her work from the Society of Professional Journalists.

When Konnie is not working, she is a fierce competitor. She is a marathon runner who has qualified several times for the prestigious Boston Marathon, and she has earned a Fourth Degree Black Belt in World Taekwondo, making her a Taekwondo Master.

Michael Thombleson

Hello, I am Michael (Mike) Thombleson and I am running for the IAACE Board of Directors.  The reason that I would like to serve on the board is because I truly believe in adult literacy and adult vocational education.  In order for Indiana to grow, we need to reach out and help all those who continue to need support in education.  I have been a member of the IAACE for the past 2.5 years and I served on the French Lick conference planning committee last year and this year.  I did enjoy the conference last year and I am looking forward to going “Back to the Future” this year.  I am currently employed through Oakland City University as the New Castle Correctional Facility Site Manager. I have worked at NCF as the department manager for the past 15 years.  I must say that my career in adult education is very rewarding and satisfying.  Occasionally, I have run into former students in the public and they have thanked me for my support. This thanks is both motivating and gratifying.  I also have taught various math classes for the past 14 years in adjunct positions for Oakland City University, Ball State University, and most recently for Ivy Tech.  I possess an M.S. degree in mathematics from Indiana State University.  Prior to working in adult education, I worked 14 years with individuals with developmental disabilities. This experience definitely helped me to develop patients, compassion and understanding of others.  I would appreciate your consideration and vote for the IAACE Board.

Cynthia Warner-Lowe

My name is Cynthia Warner-Lowe and I currently serve as the Adult Director for the School City of Hammond in Region One.

I started my educational journey teaching Biology and General Science at one of our local high schools. Seven years later, I came out of the classroom and became one of the Dean of Students at our local high school, seven more years escaped me and I stepped into the next office as one of the Assistant Principals in charge of discipline. Yes, seven years later, I again moved offices to the Assistant Principal’s office creating the school curriculum and scheduling. My principal retired and my seven year itch cycle was finally broken. I was given the opportunity to step into the role of the Adult Education Director for the School City of Hammond. Yes, it has been seven years twice over.

Supporting education of all ages has been my passion. Education for my adult learners has been my battle cry. I have attempted to support all of my adult learners and programs in order to help them r each their potential academically, socially and emotionally. My involvement with the IAACE Board of Directors has been very fulfilling. I also serve on various other community and civic boards in order to get involve and help my community grow. I believe all individuals can learn to their potential, we as educators must help them find that right plan to start their journey and be there to support them until they reach the end. I strongly believe that” to whom much is given, much is required.”

I am married to Wiley Lowe, Jr. and we reside in East Chicago with our beloved Yorkie, Booker.
