Meet the IAACE Survey Winners!

Thanks again to everyone who has taken our IAACE Teacher and Student Survey! If you haven’t had a chance to do so, we would appreciate the input of teachers and students in your region so we can share valuable data with you!

Congratulations to Steven and Jan, the winners of our survey contest that culminated at the conference. Thank you for sharing so we can get to know fellow IAACE Community Members!

1. What is your involvement/ history with adult education?
I have been involved in adult education since October 2012. I dropped out of school when I was 16. My sister thought we should try coming to ACE Academy in Dale, IN. I continue to attend because I want to have a better future and work on automotives.

2. What is one favorite memory or experience in adult education?
Once we took a field trip to a local food pantry to help sort food for Thanksgiving distributions. Although not a favorite memory, I came one question short of passing the old GED test… dang it!

3. What is your favorite IAACE resource?
My favorite resource is reading the newsletters, especially the President’s message… since the IAACE President is also my teacher. Go Kevin!

1. What is your involvement/ history with adult education?
For the last three years, I have taught GED/HSE classes in Indianapolis at Southeast Community Services and (currently) Hawthorne Community Center. These classes are part of our Center for Working Families program, which helps clients with education, employment, and financial goals. Before that I taught middle school language arts and computers at Little Flower Catholic School, a wonderful place for kids and teachers alike on Indy’s near eastside. Teaching is my “second act” after spending most of my work life in corporate training.

2. What is one favorite memory or experience in adult education?
I’m pretty reserved, but two inspiring students made me cry for different reasons. The first was when “Caleb” called to say he passed his GED after two years of on-and-off effort, personal set-backs, and multiple retests. The second time I cried with “Tammy,” who was in the throws of despair after yet another non-pass on multiple re-tests. She passed her final subject on the next try and reached the magic number of 2250 total points.

3. What is your favorite IAACE resource?
I love the annual conference– the presenters are so well-prepared and share such great ideas.
